Emotional courses in the Hérault: golf, terroir and traditions

11th May 2023 5224

Between the Cévennes and the Mediterranean, the history of the Hérault dates back to Antiquity. Its golf courses are more recent but between Montpellier and Béziers, the harmony is successful. Land of sports, wine-making, land of sunshine, Languedoc has treasures to reveal for those who awaken their senses.

4 golf courses in the Hérault

Birthplace of the Golfy Network, the Golf de Massane took shape in 1988 in the northeast of the Languedoc capital. The Californian architect Ronald Fream was given carte blanche to shape his layout between a few pieces of water, in play on 7 holes. He created relief, artificial mounds, doglegs and a myriad of trappers bunkers, ready to catch the stray bullets. In 2020, the acquisition of the club by Eoden, a regional company specialized in ecological transition, allows, following numerous works, the improvement of water management with the renovation of the irrigation system and the rehabilitation of the course. In parallel to the 9 and 18-hole golf courses, the practice on two floors has 24 positions. A training device equipped with trackman technology, the most advanced on the market, allowing golfers to accurately improve their swing.

Since 1991 in the north-west of Montpellier, the Hôtel Golf Fontcaude has brought greenery into the scrubland. Chris Pittman from New Zealand has optimised this slightly hilly plain to create 27 holes on 80 hectares, around an 86-room hotel. On the field, doglegs follow one another – there’s no need to cut above the scrubland – towards elevated greens that require precision in approaches and putting touch; their speed exceeds their reputation. The end of the course is solid with, among other things, the par 3 on the 17th where the overflight of a ravine is impressive. On the terrace of La Garrigue, the club table, the view of the course is soothing while that of the menu with Mediterranean flavors is invigorating, appetizing...

Born in 1980, the oldest club around Montpellier, the Golf du Pic Saint-Loup faces this emblematic summit of the Hérault renowned for its vineyard. For a few years, at the cost of valiant efforts, this club with 27 holes has been revamped. The initial route of Donald Harradine changed thanks to Robert Berthet, with now the courses of Puech (18T) and Coulondres (9T), confirmed in this direction by Marek Nowak and his team of gardeners. A new practice was created, encouraging players to work on their swing. If the relief is still there, the steep slopes testify to it, the views of the Great Blue and the table of Coulondrines can only delight visitors as well as regulars.

A few steps from the docks of the Orb and the alleys Pierre-Paul Riquet, the Golf de Béziers Saint-Thomas enjoys the scrubland between the Cévennes to the north and the Catalan Canigou to the south. In 1992, Patrice Lambert gave shape to the course, integrating the marshes into his design, planting some trees while beautiful villas grew around a slightly hilly terrain. When the tramontane enters the game, the Amen corner biterrois – from 14 to 16 – takes effect. Between the ducks and the majestic swans parading on the water, the birdies are then discreet on the greens! At the heart of the largest vineyard in the world by its area, in a club appreciated by sportsmen – the rugby players of the ASB in front -, the clubhouse table is welcome to water a beautiful card or forget the vagaries of a chaotic game...

Where to stay?

Since ancient times, the Château L'Hospitalet**** has been a welcoming place at the gates of Narbonne. Today, property of the wines Gérard Bertrand, with its 41 rooms and suites between the castle and the villa Soleilla, the "Wine Resort" enjoys the view on a thousand hectares of scrubland and vineyards in the heart of the massif of Clape, close to the beaches of Gruissan. At dinner time, the choice is difficult between "Chez Paule" where the menu is inspired by the ancient recipes of Paule Bertrand – the grandmother born on January 1, 1900, the family reference -, "the Art of Living" the gourmet restaurant where chef Laurent Chabert sublimates the work of regional producers, and "l'Hospitalet Beach" on the hotel’s beach, a few kilometers away. After a round of golf on the Béziers Saint Thomas course located about thirty kilometers, a stopover at the Spa Soleilla is essential for an exceptional moment. In expert hands and high quality products, everything is combined for relaxation and well-being. Guided tours take place on the grounds of the estate, ideal for discovering the secrets of the Oc grape varieties, an olfactory, gustatory escape, which will seduce all your senses. Every year in July, the festival "Jazz à l'Hospitalet" welcomes a plethora of artists, enough to link musical culture with the art of living in Occitan.

Horizon Resort - Golf de Massane has been enriched with a brand new 4-star hotel, nestled in an eco-designed building in harmony with the curves of the golf course. Everything is there to offer a stay combining serenity, comfort and passion for the game.

And when the Occitanian sun shines, guests can continue to relax in the solarium or on the terrace of the bar Zeste, with a breathtaking view of the 18 holes—the ideal place to enjoy a well-deserved break after the course.

It is in an old residence of the bishops of Agde from the 19th century, in Nézignan-l'Évêque, that the Hotel Saint-Alban **** is nestled behind a gate and surrounded by a generous vegetation illuminated with colorful flowers and chirping birds. This mansion, whose silhouette adorns the labels of a vintage still produced today and appreciated by connoisseurs, was renovated in 2018 and additional rooms were added in 2022 and 2024, which awakens the classic spirit of the residence with a touch of elegant modernity. It is located less than 10 km from the Golf de Béziers Saint Thomas.

Let yourself be seduced by the charm of the Hotel Golf Fontcaude***: an establishment with 46 rooms, and 40 apartments completely renovated in 2025. Its restaurant "le Club House" offers lunches facing the golf course, with a tasty brasserie-style catering made up of fresh market products.

The Residences of Coulondres, located on the Golf du Pic Saint Loup, invite you to stay in the heart of Languedoc Roussillon. Tourism in the Hérault

Nicknamed the "Venice of Languedoc" for its island location between the sea, the pond of Thau, its canals and its graus, Sète has a history dating back to Antiquity.

From the Renaissance to the eighteenth century, the city knows a considerable boom thanks to its port located at the mouth of the Canal du Midi, and which competes on the edges of the Mediterranean with Marseille. During the 19th century, the city protected itself from marine erosion with the construction of a dike and a breakwater. The problem remains topical. For twenty years, the stabilization of the coastline has been a priority supported by European funds. But Sète also saw the birth of illustrious talents such as Paul Valéry, Jean Vilar – both buried at the marine cemetery -, Manitas de Plata – the Gypsy with silver hands -, the painter Robert Combas and the most famous, the poet whose mustache, pipe and guitar gained height well-beyond Mont Saint-Clair, Georges Brassens of course! Every year, around August 25 for the Saint-Louis festivities – a lively week -, Sète fills up around the nautical jousts on the royal canal, a sporting event dating back to 1743. There, to the sound of drums and oboes, the knights of the canal confront each other with their spears in hand, securely positioned at the back of the boats representing the neighborhoods of the city. The audience is asking for more...

Gastronomy

The vine and the Languedoc, a story of love, sun, terroir more than 2000 years old! In the largest wine region in the world, since 1975, Gérard Bertrand has been passionate about vines, grape harvest and wine.
Fervent defender of the environment, Gérard Bertrand has been working in biodynamics – a centenary concept – for more than twenty years on all his vines throughout Languedoc-Roussillon, approximately 950 hectares. Biodynamics goes through the 'all natural' where only organic fertilizers are used. From 'bio 2.0'! The winemaker tends the vine, strengthens it and harvests its fruits, without exhausting it. Prioritizing quality over quantity, a radical evolution in a region where people still made the vine "pisser" not so long ago! Since Paule Bertrand in 1920, after Georges – disappeared in 1987 – and Gérard, Emma and Mathias are the 4th generation of winemakers in the family. Former rugby player, Gérard Bertrand built his group on the values of this wonderful sport, performance and excellence. In more than 30 years at the head of the company, he has acquired numerous estates, allowing him to diversify his production into grape varieties, both red and white, rosé and even orange wine, a blend of chardonnay, of Viognier, Roussane and Grenache blanc inspired by Georgia wines, also full of sun. Without forgetting its natural sweet wines, its Banyuls, its Maury, its Muscat de Rivesaltes, these Catalan wines that enhance the end of a meal, a chocolate dessert! Given the diversity of its production, sommeliers could recommend a Gérard Bertrand wine with each dish, from starter to dessert.

Heritage

Often cited as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert was born in 804, when Saint-Guilhem founded his abbey in the Haut-Hérault, in the valley of Gellone, a "desert" for which it was named.
In the Middle Ages, the relic of a piece of the "Holy Cross" offered by Charlemagne attracts pilgrims before the village becomes a stop on the Via Tolosa, on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Today, the village with its narrow streets, its stone walls covered with climbing plants, its roofs of round tiles, its centuries-old plane tree on the main square, is very touristy even if it remains difficult to access by a small winding road. Nearby, the Pont du Diable spanning the Hérault dates back to the Romanesque era. A few hundred meters away, the cave of Clamousse, a speleological site presenting very beautiful concretions including the White Corridor, was discovered in 1945, accessible to the public since 1964. In a concern for preservation, it has been lit by LED since 2010, which made it the first "green" cave in France.

Event

The enthusiasm extends far beyond the Iberian Peninsula even if the enthusiasm for bullfighting is sometimes contested. The feria of Béziers was born in 1968, in arenas dating from the end of the 19th century. The greatest matadors have touréé in Béziers, Luis Miguel Dominguin, El Cordobes, Paco Ojeda to name but a few, not forgetting Sébastien Castella, the child of the country who received the alternative there in August 2000. Every year, around August 15, nearly a million people gather in Béziers for a festive week, with a common passion for the art of bullfighting. The arenas cannot accommodate everyone, the bodegas and casittas fill up at noon while the peñas and bandas encourage the crowd to dance, mingle, have fun until late in the night...

The Hérault does not content itself with offering beautiful golf courses. This corner of the South combines all the pleasures. From the fairways carved in the garrigue to the sunny terraces of the vineyards, through the alleys full of history and the tables inspired by the terroir, the Languedoc reveals all its richness to those who take the time to discover it.
