The golf de la Freslonnière maintains a simple philosophy on the outskirts of Rennes: to contribute to the development of everyone through a technical quality course and a common mindset.
Text by Arnaud Blanc
Located in the grounds of a family castle, the Golf de la Freslonnière, created in 1989, quickly found its uniqueness on the outskirts of Rennes: a century-old forest course, bordered by flamboyant rhododendrons in spring and bright foliage in autumn, which seduces both players and walkers. But beyond its refined outline, it is above all a state of mind that makes its particularity. "We are talking about the Freslo spirit" explains Véronique Spillmann, director of the Breton structure. It is a mantra that embodies cohesion and the collective. Everyone, from the employee to the most recently arrived member, contributes to living this place and creating a unique atmosphere. Because all those who work there are overwhelmingly golfers by passion, the Golf de la Freslonnière is defined as a course of connoisseurs. In the image of his journey, signed by the architect Alain du Bouëxic with a drawing much more technical than physical. "It’s not the distance that makes the difficulty, says the director. Those who want to take out the driver can have fun finding lines above the trees, but here it is especially necessary to master your irons. That’s essentially why I say that our members have an exportable index: the score we play here is generally a guarantee to be played everywhere else" she smiles.
From this spirit naturally follows an asserted sporting ambition. For several years, the Freslonnière has been investing heavily in training, coaching young people and the development of its teams. The success of Constance Fouillet, 77th amateur player in the world and a member of the France women’s team with a rich record, is also a symbol. Licensed at the club from a very young age, the player embodies the passion of the club for performance. "She has shown that work, supervision and passion can go a long way, since she is now continuing her journey as a champion in the United States," says Véronique Spillmann. Today, the Freslo spirit is therefore found in the eleven teams of the club. Supervised by a sports association and by motivated professionals, and supported by committed patrons that the director would like to thank, the young people benefit from a complete follow-up: both technical and physical preparation within rich infrastructures such as indoor putting. "These are not empty words, it is a true dedication of everyone," insists the one who sees in this project a way to anchor the club in its territory while offering young people a place of fulfillment. The Freslo spirit is nourished here by mutual aid, emulation and the pleasure of progressing together.
But the Freslonnière does not stop at its sporting dimension. The soul of the club also lies in its atmosphere of nature and resourcing. Beyond the golf, the castle and its outbuildings welcome visitors in comfortable rooms and cottages, with swimming pool and natural relaxation areas.
" What we propose is not a multitude of activities, but a real bubble of a regenerating nature, explains the manager, and people tell us that they feel it this way". Here, we come to disconnect, enjoy the calm, savor a gourmet cuisine, creative and local, or let ourselves be carried by the beauty of the seasons. The tourist anchorage is strong: 15 minutes from Rennes and within reach of the Emerald Coast, Saint-Malo or the forest of Brocéliande, golf fits perfectly into a Breton getaway where heritage, gastronomy and sport combine. For the future, the club continues its path with the same philosophy: the qualitative maintenance of the course, the perpetual improvement of training facilities, the accentuation of eco-responsible approaches to preserve the biodiversity of the site, the hosting of friendly events.
True to its history, the Freslonnière advances with elegance and humility, driven by a united collective and conviction: here, golf is much more than a sport, it’s a shared pleasure to live.
