Basozábal, stage for a tribute to the legend

The European Legends Cup by José María Olazábal, to be played in September, will pay tribute to one of the greatest names in golf, José María Olazábal, in a tournament held on a course he designed himself: the Real Nuevo Club de Golf de San Sebastián, Basozábal.​

The event, scheduled from 5 to 7 September, returns to Spain after the success of its first edition last year at Golf Almerimar, won by Adilson da Silva after a play-off.

For the first time this year, the course of Basozábal, at the gates of San Sebastian, will host a tournament of this magnitude. Offering magnificent views of the mountains and a strategic route perfectly integrated into the natural landscape, Basozábal promises to be a great challenge for the players of the Legends Tour.

«It is an honour that the Legends Tour comes to San Sebastian, and that the European Legends Cup takes place on a course that I designed with so much passion and dedication», says Olazábal. Many friends, tournament winners from around the world, will be present. Knowing that they’re going to play on a course that reflects my vision of the game is an immense satisfaction. I’m sure they’ll enjoy the field... and my city. It will be a very important week for me, and I hope to live up to it.”

Phil Harrison, president of the Legends Tour, highlighted the importance of this milestone and the tribute:
"José María Olazábal embodies the most authentic values of golf. Paying tribute to him on a course he designed is an ideal way to celebrate his legacy. Basozábal is a spectacular site, and we are delighted to bring the Legends Tour to San Sebastian for the first time. This edition will undoubtedly be one of the most moving and special of the season.”

One of the most respected and appreciated figures in golf worldwide, Olazábal has a 40-year career, more than 30 international victories, including two Augusta Masters, and 104 participations in Majors. He is also a Ryder Cup legend, with 12 participations: 7 as a player (often alongside his mentor Severiano Ballesteros, forming the most successful pair in Ryder’s history), 1 as winning captain at Medinah in 2012, and 4 as vice-captain. And soon a fifth, since his return was confirmed in the staff of captain Luke Donald for the next Ryder Cup, as Europe will try to win a victory on American soil - a first since the famous «Miracle de Medinah» orchestrated by Olazábal in 2012.

Beyond his sporting exploits, Olazábal has established himself as an ambassador of golf, embodying perseverance, passion and resilience. By his example, he demonstrates that the essence of golf goes beyond victory: it lies in effort, combativity and the ability to surpass oneself in the face of challenges.

The European Legends Cup by José María Olazábal will bring together the best players of the Legends Tour to pay tribute to his career, his passion, his commitment, but also to highlight his involvement with the new generations, to which Olazábal now devotes a large part of his time.

The tournament, scheduled from 5 to 7 September, is organized by JGolf with the support of the European Tour Group, Staysure, Viñas Familia Gil and Maximiliano Jabugo.
